Jim Baigan joined IOE after serving as the Chief Patient Safety Officer and the founding director of the National Center for Patient Safety at the VA Hospital system. He is an engineer, a medical doctor and an astronaut. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Medicine, the Department of Defense Health Board/Trauma and Injury Subcommittee, and the NASA Aerospace Safety Advisory Board. Jim is the founding director of the Center for Healthcare Engineering and Patient Safety.

Seth Guikema is a Proffesor in the departments of Industrial & Operations Engineering and Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Michigan. He is also a Professor II (adjunct) in the Department of Safety, Economics, and Planning at the University of Stavanger as well as a Data Science Research Fellow at One Concern, Inc. The research in Professor Guikema’s group is described in his web site, particularly under the Research tab.

Student Contributors
Tessa Swanson is a PhD student advised by Dr. Seth Guikema in the Industrial and Operations Engineering department at the University of Michigan. She researches statistical methods to model complex systems for public good including for applications in disaster resilience, public transportation, and public health. In addition to the IOE department, she is enrolled in the Urban Informatics certificate program through the Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning. Prior to arriving at Michigan, she worked for two years as a transportation planning consultant in Boston, MA. She received her undergraduate degree from the Industrial Engineering and Management Sciences department at Northwestern University in 2016.
Claire Payne is an undergraduate studying Industrial and Operations Engineering at the University of Michigan- Ann Arbor and will graduate in 2023. She started working with the Guikema Research Group in summer 2021 on the College of Engineering COVID-19 modeling project.
Vanessa Woolley is an undergraduate persuing a degree in Environmental Engineering and a minor in Water and the Environment at the Univeristy of Michigan-Ann Arbor. She will graduate in 2023. She started working with the Guikema research group in the Summer of 2021 on the COVID-19 Ach project as well as the One Concern hydraulic modeling project.
